Below you will find the Sneak Preview for third grade. As many of the students already know and some of the parents I am going to be out on maternity leave due to a medical condition until the first week in February. I will still continue to work closely with Sr. Antonia as she covers my medical leave. I will continue to my own lesson plans for her and she will follow the NYS curriculum! She is a wonderful teacher!

ELAIn ELA third graders are learning how to extract information from nonfiction scientific readings. They are learning about adaptations and the Wide World of Frogs. They have read ‘Bullfrog at Magnolia Circle’ that talks about how frogs adapt. The author uses beautiful descriptive language to create an atmosphere of mystery. In this module, students use literacy skills to become experts— people who use reading, writing, listening and speaking to build and share deep knowledge about a topic. (This focus on research intentionally builds Module 1, in which students explored the superpowers of reading.) The module began with a class study of the bullfrog, an example of a “true frog,” that exhibit quintessentially froggy characteristics. In Unit 2, students will research as groups to become experts on various “freaky” frogs—frogs that push the boundaries of “froginess” with unusual adaptations that help them to survive in extreme environments throughout the world. Students will build their reading, research, writing and collaborative discussion skills through studying their expert frog. Throughout the module, students will consistently reflect on the role of literacy in building and sharing expertise. Students will demonstrate their expertise through a “freaky frog trading card”—a research-based narrative that highlights their research and educates others about the amazing diversity of frogs with a focus on how their freaky frog survives. We now have raz-kids please make sure your child uses it for at least 1 hour a week! Since Sr Becky is off on maternity leave I (Sr Yasmin) am conducting the 3rd grade ELA lessons. I will continue to follow the Common Core State Standards as posted on the www.engageny.org. We are doing ELA Module 2A Unit 1, lesson 3. Sr Becky will take over when she comes back insha Allah early February.
School will be closed from November 26th- 28th for Thanksgiving and reopen on Monday December 1st. Parent teacher conference is on December 4th. Notices went out last week. If you have not received it check your child’s folder to call the office. Jazak Allahu Khair, Have a great Thanksgiving holiday. Sr Yasmin |

ScienceThis week third graders will learn different parts of the seed and functions of the seed. They will be dissecting the lima bean and looking closely at the different parts. They will plant their own seed and watch it grow!If you have any questions/concerns you may reach me at arshia10@yahoo.com. | MathNext week, third graders will be taking an end of module 1 assessment. They have been given their review packet to complete of the weekend. We will review on Monday and the assessment will be Tuesday November 4, however if longer review is needed for students to understand, I will be happy pushing the test back to either Wed. or Thursday. I believe students are reading to move forward to our next unit. It is a fun hands-on unit, dealing with measurements. Included in this module is learning to tell time to the minute and figuring out elapse time. In addition, they will learn to measure using rulers and scales. Finally, the unit teaches students how to how to measure weights using balance pans. I enjoy teaching this module as many times students are up and moving doing various activities. With that said, I will ask that students continue to work hard, and continued the expected behavior. As always, homework is extremely important to the success of each student. Without the completion of all assignments your child is missing out on opportunities to learn the materials. Additionally, attendance in math class is important. With the intensity of the NY State curriculum, missing a day, or even multiple days of school puts the child in a severe disadvantage, in terms of knowing the material. Often, I do not have time to reteach entire lessons due to multiple absences. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me bonniemalley77@gmail.com |
